Coca-Cola Rhondda Rebels will begin their season with a two legged
European Elimination game with Portuguese team Boa Viagem.
The Rebels will travel to the Island of Azores for the first game
on October 18th and then host them in the Rhondda Fach Sports Centre
in East Street Tylorstown on Wednesday 25th October.
The season has been delayed due to National team commitments throughout
Europe and Rebels Player/Coach Andrea Congreaves and Captain Sally
Kaznica were part of the Great Britain tremendous success in the
summer when they were promoted to Division following victories over
Estonia, Bosnia, Luxembourg Portugal and then Holland It was especially
pleasing for Rebels Player Coach Congreaves who retired from International
competition on a high note. Congreaves will focus on helping the
Rebels to success as she brings the curtain down on a Illustrious
basketball career in a game where she has achieved so much.
Congreaves playing career began in Crystal Palace in London, before
at 17 gaining a scholarship at Mercer University in the states where
she excelled and is in the top 10 leading scorers in the entire
NCAA history!
From there she made a name for herself all over Europe and winning
Championship medals in Italy Spain and France and also reached European
Cup Final with Bourges in 2000.
After last season disappointment of losing out on the National
Cup and League title in dramatic fashion the Rebels will be looking
to wipe the slate clean and have recruited well to assemble what
is hoped will be a competitive squad.
The Rebels have brought in American Imports LaNedra Brown and Kirby
Copeland, Brown played in Israel last season and average 15 point
per game while Copeland finished her college career at Virginia
Tech with an impressive 14 pts per game English u18 Players of the
Year and GB under 20 International Harriett Yea also come is to
the squad and has impressed in training.
The European Elimination game will be the Rebels first home game
of the season, but there is every incentive to succeed as the winners
will pit themselves up against top teams for Spain, Italy and France
